Klaten Regency – Students of the Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata/KKN) of Universitas Diponegoro (Undip) introduced simple bookkeeping as part of financial management through a community service program in Karang Village, Delanggu District, Klaten Regency. The activities included education, discussions, and bookkeeping assistance, initially targeting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and members of the Family Welfare Empowerment (Pemberdayaan dan Kesejahteraan Keluarga/PKK) group.
Through the program, the students introduced bookkeeping as a simple way to record business income and expenses and to understand a business’s financial condition. Bookkeeping does not have to be complicated, but can be made flexible according to the needs and circumstances of its users.
The need for bookkeeping assistance was identified when the students conducted an MSME survey on Monday (13/07/2026) and discussed financial record-keeping with Siddiq, an MSME owner from RW 07, Jogodayoh Hamlet, Karang Village, who runs a glove manufacturing business. Siddiq explained that bookkeeping remained a challenge for his business due to limited time and human resources. In response to this situation, the students helped create a simple Microsoft Excel-based bookkeeping template tailored to his business needs. Assistance in using the template was subsequently provided on Wednesday (22/07/2026) at Siddiq’s business premises in RW 07, Jogodayoh Hamlet, Karang Village.
In addition to targeting MSMEs, the bookkeeping program also expanded to address the needs of the community at the hamlet level. This began when the students attended a lapanan community gathering on the evening of 13 July 2026 in RW 02, Kendon Hamlet, Karang Village. During the gathering, discussions on the hamlet’s financial records and reports highlighted a need for better understanding of bookkeeping. Bowo, the Treasurer of Kendon Hamlet, then learned that an Accounting student was part of the KKN team and expressed his interest in learning bookkeeping.
“Is there an Accounting student here? Please come and meet me later. I want to learn bookkeeping,” said Bowo.
Following his request, the KKN students held a discussion with Bowo on Wednesday (15/07/2026) regarding challenges and needs in financial record-keeping at the hamlet level. The discussion was subsequently followed by bookkeeping assistance on Saturday (08/08/2026).
In addition to assisting the Hamlet Treasurer, the students also carried out the program’s initial target through community education. On Sunday (19/07/2026), the KKN students conducted a bookkeeping session for MSMEs with members of the PKK group in RW 02, Kendon Hamlet, Karang Village. The session discussed the importance of bookkeeping and simple financial record-keeping in business activities.
The series of activities demonstrated that bookkeeping education can develop according to the needs of the community. For the KKN students, bookkeeping does not have to involve complicated records, but can begin with the simple and regular recording of financial transactions according to the user’s needs.
The activities were part of the KKN students’ efforts to apply their accounting knowledge while responding to the needs they encountered through direct interaction with the community of Karang Village.
